All India Trinamool Congress has strongly denied reports claiming that party MP Abhishek Banerjee received notices from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) regarding multiple properties allegedly linked to him and his family.
In a statement, the party described the alleged notice as “completely false, fabricated and devoid of any credibility.”
“We have come across media coverage and posts related to a KMC notice that was leaked ‘unofficially’ by the BJP, highlighting multiple properties allegedly linked to AITC National General Secretary and Hon’ble MP Shri Abhishek Banerjee, while also attempting to associate other leaders with the matter,” the statement said.
The party further alleged that the narrative was being amplified without proper verification and urged journalists to independently check the facts rather than rely on claims circulated online.
“We urge the media fraternity to exercise sensitivity and responsibility instead of promoting such fabricated posts and stories,” the statement added, warning that legal action could be pursued against false reporting or misleading content.
The response follows reports suggesting that the TMC-run KMC had issued notices seeking approved building plans and related documents for several properties allegedly linked to Banerjee, his family members and associated entities.
According to reports citing civic sources, notices were reportedly issued in connection with 17 to 21 properties for scrutiny to determine whether construction work complied with sanctioned municipal plans.
The properties reportedly under review included Banerjee’s residence on Harish Mukherjee Road and several other locations in Kolkata, including premises on Kalighat Road, Premendra Mitra Sarani, Panditiya Road and Ustad Aamir Khan Sarani.
Officials quoted in reports said the notices were allegedly issued under Section 400(1) of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation Act, 1980, which permits authorities to seek clarification regarding suspected unauthorised construction and provide property owners an opportunity to present their case.
The notices were also said to seek documents related to building plans and permissions for structural modifications, including additions such as lifts and escalators.
