China Pledges Global South Leadership Ahead of COP30 Climate Summit in Belém
The 30th UN Climate Change Conference (COP30) will take place in Belém, Brazil, from November 10 to 21, 2025, against a backdrop of global climate challenges, including the United States’ exit from the Paris Agreement. Ahead of the summit, Chinese President Xi Jinping reaffirmed China’s commitment to climate leadership, emphasizing cooperation with Brazil and other Global South nations to advance sustainable development and climate justice.
China’s Climate Commitments
Xi pledged that China would work closely with Brazil to set an example of unity and self-reliance among major Global South countries, aiming for a just and sustainable planet. China plans to unveil its new Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) at COP30, focusing on limiting global warming to 1.5°C and reporting progress on financial pledges made at COP29.
Key commitments include:
- Reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 7–10% from peak levels by 2035
- Raising the share of non-fossil fuels to 30% of total energy consumption
- Expanding wind and solar capacity sixfold from 2020 levels, targeting 3,600 GW
Multilateralism and Global South Cooperation
China stressed genuine multilateralism and adherence to the Paris Agreement’s principle of common but differentiated responsibilities. Xi highlighted the BRICS platform as essential for uniting developing nations, despite global obstacles such as US unilateral measures, trade tensions, and climate skepticism in parts of Latin America.
China-Brazil Partnership
China expressed strong support for Brazil’s sovereignty and climate leadership, underlining the importance of joint strategies to achieve mutually beneficial climate outcomes. The two countries aim to enhance coordination, align development strategies, and build a China-Brazil community with a shared future focused on climate resilience.
