Cristiano Ronaldo calls Manchester United’s plight “sad,” says Amorim isn’t a miracle worker

Cristiano Ronaldo has criticised the current state of Manchester United, calling the club’s decline “sad” and saying it has lost the structure and identity that once made it great.

The Portuguese star, who enjoyed two successful spells at Old Trafford, said he still holds the club close to his heart but believes it is now suffering from years of poor leadership and planning. Speaking to Piers Morgan in a recent interview, Ronaldo said, “Manchester United will always mean a lot to me, but it hurts to see what’s happening. The club doesn’t have the structure or strategy it used to. You can’t achieve success without a clear vision and the right people running things.”

The 40-year-old Al Nassr forward also defended United’s manager, Ruben Amorim, who has come under pressure after mixed results this season. “He’s doing everything he can, but he’s not a magician,” Ronaldo said. “At this point, expecting miracles is unfair. As we say in Portugal, miracles only happen in Fátima.”

Amorim, who recently completed a year in charge, has helped United become more competitive but continues to face challenges after inheriting a squad low on confidence. Ronaldo urged fans and the club hierarchy to give the Portuguese coach time to rebuild. “You can see some progress, but rebuilding a team like Manchester United takes patience and support,” he said.

Ronaldo also questioned whether every player at the club understands what it truly means to wear the Manchester United badge. “It’s not just about talent,” he said. “It’s about mentality, discipline, and pride. Some players don’t fully understand the history and expectations of this club.”

Despite his disappointment, Ronaldo spoke fondly of United and expressed hope that the club could find its way back to the top. “The potential is still there — the fans, the name, the legacy. But potential means nothing without structure. United need strong leadership and long-term planning to be great again,” he said.

Ronaldo, who scored 145 goals in 346 appearances for United, left the club in 2022 following a controversial interview with Morgan and now plays for Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr. His latest remarks, though critical, reflect his deep connection with Manchester United and his desire to see the club restored to its former glory.
