CWG 2026 Day 5: Gulveer Scripts History, Harjinder Adds Silver as India’s Medal Tally Reaches 12
India enjoyed another successful day at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games on July 28, with Gulveer Singh creating history in athletics and Harjinder Kaur claiming a silver medal in weightlifting. The country’s boxing contingent also guaranteed three more medals after an impressive showing in the quarter-finals.
The day’s performances took India’s medal tally to 12 medals — 2 gold, 7 silver and 3 bronze — with the contingent remaining in the top 10 of the overall standings.
Gulveer Creates History in 10,000m
The standout performance came from Gulveer Singh, who became the first Indian man to win a Commonwealth Games medal in a long-distance track event.
Competing in wet and challenging conditions, Gulveer stayed with the lead pack throughout the 25-lap men’s 10,000m final before unleashing a powerful sprint over the closing stages. He crossed the finish line in 27:49.78 to secure the silver medal behind Australia’s Ky Robinson, while David Mullarkey of the Isle of Man finished third.
The result also marked the first time since 1986 that no African athlete finished on the podium in the event.
Harjinder Wins Weightlifting Silver
Harjinder Kaur continued India’s strong showing in weightlifting by winning silver in the women’s 69kg category, improving on the bronze she won at the Birmingham 2022 Games. She recorded a total lift of 221kg, successfully lifting 101kg in the snatch and 120kg in the clean and jerk. Canada’s Charlotte Simoneau won gold with a Games record, while Australia’s Olivia Hayman claimed bronze.
- Harjinder’s medal was India’s seventh in weightlifting at the Glasgow Games.
- Three Boxers Seal Podium Finishes
India also strengthened its boxing campaign as three pugilists advanced to the semi-finals, guaranteeing themselves at least bronze medals under Commonwealth Games rules. Jadumani Singh Mandengbam (Men’s 55kg) defeated Zambia’s Mwengo Mwale by unanimous decision to reach the last four.
Priya Ghanghas (Women’s 60kg) overcame Scotland’s Niamh Mitchell with a commanding display to book a semi-final berth. Preeti Pawar (Women’s 54kg) continued her impressive run by winning her quarter-final and securing a guaranteed medal.
Mixed Fortunes in Other Events
India also suffered setbacks in boxing, with Parveen Hooda losing to England’s Sacha Hickey in the women’s 65kg quarter-finals and Kapil Pokhariya bowing out of the men’s 90kg event after a unanimous defeat to Scotland’s Robert McNulty.
In athletics, Pooja Singh finished eighth in the women’s high jump after clearing 1.77m, with heavy rain disrupting the competition. On the track, Vishal TK qualified for the men’s 400m semi-finals, while Rajesh Ramesh failed to advance.
In swimming, Srihari Nataraj missed out on the men’s 100m backstroke final after finishing 12th overall in the semi-finals, and Sajan Prakash exited in the men’s 50m butterfly heats. In lawn bowls, Nayanmoni Saikia was beaten by Wales’ Amy Williams in the women’s singles Section C match.
With history made on the track, another weightlifting medal secured and three more boxing medals assured, India ended Day 5 on a positive note and will look to continue its momentum in the coming days of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
