Dalai Lama Reasserts Sole Authority Over Reincarnation, Rejects China’s Claim,
In a firm pushback against China’s bid to control the succession of the Tibetan spiritual leadership, the Dalai Lama has reiterated that only the Gaden Phodrang Trust — his official institution — holds the exclusive authority to recognise his future reincarnation.
In a statement released this week, the Dalai Lama recalled that as early as 1969, he had made it clear that the future of the Dalai Lama institution should be decided by the Tibetan people and followers of Tibetan Buddhism. He reaffirmed a 2011 resolution that formally vests the responsibility of identifying the next Dalai Lama with the Gaden Phodrang Trust, in consultation with the heads of Tibetan Buddhist traditions and the lineage’s spiritual protectors.
“I hereby reiterate that the Gaden Phodrang Trust has sole authority to recognise the future reincarnation; no one else has any such authority to interfere in this matter,” the Dalai Lama said, making his position unambiguous.
Community Appeals, Global Backing
The 88-year-old spiritual leader said he has received repeated appeals over the last 14 years from Tibetans in Tibet and abroad, as well as from Buddhist communities across Asia — including in Mongolia, Russia, and even mainland China — urging him to ensure the continuation of the Dalai Lama lineage.
He confirmed that his reincarnation will continue, but only through the traditional religious processes defined by Tibetan Buddhist practices — and not under the influence of any political power.
Tensions With Beijing Set to Escalate
The statement comes amid persistent efforts by the Chinese government to assert control over the reincarnation process, which Beijing sees as a means of maintaining authority over Tibet. China has previously declared that any successor to the Dalai Lama must be approved by the state — a position Tibetans and international human rights advocates have widely condemned.
With his latest remarks, the Dalai Lama has drawn a clear line, rejecting China’s claims and reinforcing the spiritual sovereignty of the Tibetan religious tradition.
