Daniil Medvedev, Family Stranded in Dubai Amid Middle East Tensions
Former world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev’s Dubai triumph has been overshadowed by an unexpected disruption. The Russian star, along with his family and team, is stranded in the United Arab Emirates after regional airspace closures following U.S. airstrikes on Iran.
Medvedev clinched his 23rd ATP title at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships just a day before flights were grounded, leaving several players unable to depart. Speaking to Bolshe Tennis in Russian, Medvedev said, “The situation is unusual… the airspace is closed, and no one knows when we’ll be able to fly out. We’re just waiting to see what happens in the coming hours or days.”
Despite the uncertainty, the 2021 US Open champion remains calm. “I’ve received many messages from friends and family, and everyone is worried, but I can say everything is fine,” he added.
Other players stranded in Dubai include fellow Russians Andrey Rublev and Mirra Andreeva, as well as Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor, who withdrew from the Dubai final due to a hamstring injury. Doubles players Harri Heliovaara, Mate Pavic, Henry Patten, and Marcelo Arevalo are also affected.
The stranded players were scheduled to compete at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California, starting Wednesday, along with mixed doubles exhibition matches featuring Medvedev-Andreeva and Rublev-Anisimova. Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, who lost to Medvedev in the semifinals, was among the few to leave Dubai before the closures and has already reached Indian Wells to practise.
With the Indian Wells tournament imminent, players, coaches, and officials are waiting for updates, hoping the airspace reopens in time to avoid disruptions to the ATP calendar.
