A powerful explosion targeting a train carrying military personnel and their families killed at least 24 people and injured more than 50 others in southwest Pakistan on Sunday, authorities said. The blast took place near the railway line in Quetta, the capital of Balochistan, an area long affected by insurgent violence.
According to officials, the train was travelling from Quetta to Peshawar when an explosive-laden vehicle struck one of the carriages near Chaman Pattak, triggering a major blast. Army personnel were among those killed, while many others onboard were reportedly travelling home for Eid holidays.
The impact overturned multiple train coaches and set at least two carriages on fire. Thick smoke was seen rising from the site, while nearby vehicles and buildings also suffered damage. Witnesses described scenes of panic as survivors and rescue workers searched through the wreckage.
Provincial authorities said investigations into the attack are ongoing. Reports indicated that the separatist militant group Balochistan Liberation Army had claimed responsibility for the bombing, saying the attack targeted security personnel.
Balochistan has repeatedly witnessed violence linked to separatist groups seeking greater autonomy or independence from Pakistan’s central government. The province has seen several attacks on security forces, infrastructure and transport networks in recent years.
