December 26 Marks Veer Bal Diwas, Celebrating the Courage of Sikh Sahibzadas

Veer Bal Diwas, observed every year on December 26, commemorates the extraordinary courage and supreme sacrifice of the four sons of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Sikh Guru. The day celebrates their unwavering faith, bravery, and commitment to truth and dharma, even in the face of oppression.

The Sahibzadas’ Legacy

The four Sahibzadas—Ajit Singh, Jujhar Singh, Zorawar Singh, and Fateh Singh—are timeless symbols of valor. The elder sons attained martyrdom on the battlefield, while the younger sons, aged just 6 and 9, were captured during the siege of Anandpur Sahib. Offered safety if they renounced their faith, they refused to compromise their beliefs and were bricked alive, leaving an indelible mark on history.

December 26 marks the martyrdom of Sahibzada Zorawar Singh and Sahibzada Fateh Singh. The day serves as a reminder of the courage and moral strength of children who chose truth over fear, and continues to inspire generations.

How Veer Bal Diwas is Observed

Across India, particularly in Punjab, and among Sikh communities worldwide, the day is observed with devotion and reverence:

• Gurudwaras hold special prayers, kirtans, and readings from the Guru Granth Sahib.
• Schools and educational institutions organise storytelling sessions, exhibitions, and seminars to educate children about the Sahibzadas’ sacrifice.

• Individuals reflect on ideals of courage, compassion, and service to humanity.

In 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the Veer Bal Diwas observance in New Delhi. During the event, he launched the Suposhit Panchayat Abhiyaan to improve community nutrition and engagement, and presented the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar to 17 children excelling in various fields, reinforcing the message of courage, dedication, and excellence.
