A 30-year-old woman and her three young daughters, aged five, four and three, were found murdered in their rented home in north Delhi’s Samaypur Badli on Wednesday morning, police said. The woman’s husband, identified as the prime suspect, is absconding.
Police said the motive behind the killings is yet to be determined.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer North) Hareshwar Swami said the victims were identified as Anita and her three daughters. The family, originally from Patna district in Bihar, had been living in a rented single-room accommodation in Chandan Park. The suspect, Munchun Kewat, works as a ginger seller at Azadpur Mandi.
“The incident came to light around 8am when neighbours informed the police. A team from Samaypur Badli police station reached the spot and found the bodies of the woman and the three children inside a ground-floor room, lying in a pool of blood,” Swami said. Police said the victims’ throats had been slit with a sharp-edged weapon.
Crime team and forensic experts inspected the scene and collected evidence. “Kewat has been missing since early morning. Multiple teams have been formed to trace and apprehend him,” the officer added.
A case under Section 103(1) (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita has been registered.
According to family members, Anita and her daughters had moved to Delhi about six months ago. Relatives claimed there were no known disputes between the couple. “Everything seemed normal. They even went shopping for Holi on Tuesday evening,” a family member said.
However, investigators said some neighbours reported hearing a verbal argument between the couple on Tuesday night, though no disturbance was reported at the time.
Police officials said CCTV footage showed the suspect running from a street near the residence around 5am. His mobile phone was later found switched off in the Jahangirpuri area. Searches are underway.
