Luis Diaz starred with a goal and an assist as Colombia kicked off their FIFA World Cup campaign in style, defeating debutants Uzbekistan 3-1 in their Group K opener at the iconic Azteca Stadium on Wednesday.

Returning to the World Cup after missing out on the 2022 edition in Qatar, Colombia took advantage of a favourable result earlier in the day, with Portugal being held to a 1-1 draw by DR Congo. The outcome gave Nestor Lorenzo’s side the perfect opportunity to gain an early edge in Group K.

Despite dominating possession from the outset, Colombia initially struggled to break down a disciplined Uzbekistan defence. The Central Asian side, playing in their first-ever World Cup match, remained compact and frustrated the South Americans for much of the opening half.

Colombia finally found the breakthrough in the 41st minute through Daniel Munoz. Luis Diaz was the architect, delivering a dangerous ball into the area that allowed the marauding full-back to slip behind his marker and steer an acrobatic finish past the goalkeeper.

The South Americans appeared in complete control, but Uzbekistan produced a memorable moment shortly after the hour mark. Camilo Vargas could only parry Eldor Shomurodov’s effort into the path of Abbosbek Fayzullaev, who reacted quickest to nod home and score Uzbekistan’s first-ever FIFA World Cup goal.

The equaliser briefly raised hopes of a famous upset, but Colombia’s quality soon shone through. Just five minutes later, Diaz capped an outstanding performance by cutting in from the left and calmly finishing beyond the goalkeeper to restore his side’s advantage.

With momentum back on their side, Colombia dictated the closing stages and continued to create chances. Uzbekistan battled bravely but struggled to contain the relentless pressure as fatigue began to take its toll.

Any lingering doubt over the result was removed in stoppage time when substitute Jaminton Campaz powered home a header to complete a convincing 3-1 victory.

The win lifts Colombia to the top of Group K with three points, ahead of Portugal and DR Congo, who shared the spoils in their opening fixture. Colombia will next face DR Congo in Guadalajara on June 23, while Uzbekistan continue their maiden World Cup adventure against Portugal in Houston.
