Diplomacy squandered’: **Antonio Guterres slams strikes as US, Iran envoys clash at United Nations Security Council
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres sharply condemned the recent US and Israeli military strikes on Iran, saying the attacks have undermined efforts at diplomatic resolution and posed a serious threat to global peace and stability during an emergency Security Council session.
Guterres warned that a diplomatic opportunity that had been building — including preparations for talks in Vienna — has now been “squandered” by the sudden escalation of hostilities.
Speaking at the emergency meeting called amid rising Middle East tensions, Guterres stressed that military action carries the risk of igniting uncontrollable conflict and urged all parties to de-escalate and return to negotiations, including on Iran’s nuclear programme. He reiterated calls for compliance with international law and the UN Charter to protect civilians and avert a broader regional war.
The meeting also saw intense exchanges between envoys from the United States, Iran and Israel. The US ambassador defended the strikes as lawful and necessary to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, while Iran’s envoy denounced them as illegal and called for accountability. Meanwhile, Israel’s representative argued the action was vital to counter existential threats posed by Tehran.
Guterres’ remarks reflect deep concern within the international community that the conflict could spiral further without immediate diplomatic engagement.
