Doctor explains how walking may aid fat loss better than running: ‘Your body burns more fat at a slower pace’

Many people assume running is the best exercise for fat loss, but walking might actually offer more sustainable results, says Dr Kunal Sood, an anaesthesiologist and pain medicine physician.

In an Instagram video, Dr Sood explained that the difference lies in how the body uses energy. “When you run, your body primarily burns carbohydrates for fuel,” he said. “Running also raises cortisol levels, which can increase carb cravings and make it harder to maintain a calorie deficit. So even though running burns more calories, it can leave you hungrier afterward.”

Walking, on the other hand, is a low-intensity activity that encourages the body to use fat as its main energy source while keeping cortisol levels lower. This makes it easier to manage hunger and stick to a calorie deficit — key factors for long-term fat loss.

“Walking might not seem as intense, but it’s often more effective for consistent fat loss,” Dr Sood noted, adding that running still has benefits like improving heart health and mood. “The best exercise is the one that fits your body and lifestyle.”
