Uttar Pradesh: 2 Dead, Dozens Injured After Electric Shock Sparks Chaos at Barabanki Temple.

Two devotees died and over 40 others were injured in a stampede-like situation early Monday outside the Awsaneshwar Mahadev Temple in Uttar Pradesh’s Barabanki district. The chaos was triggered when a live electric wire fell on a tin shed, sending electric current through the structure and sparking panic among the crowd.

The incident occurred around 3 am in Haidergarh, where thousands had gathered to offer jalabhishek on the third Monday of the holy Sawan month.

According to eyewitnesses, the wire snapped after a monkey jumped onto overhead lines, causing it to fall onto a shed covering part of the temple premises. The electrified metal roof resulted in multiple devotees suffering electric shocks, leading to confusion, chaos, and injuries in the densely packed area.

District Magistrate Shashank Tripathi confirmed that 19 people received electric shocks, while over 40 others were injured in the rush that followed. “Preliminary reports suggest the wire was already weakened. The situation is now under control, and a full investigation is underway,” he said.

One of the deceased was identified as Prashant (22), a resident of Mubarakpura village under Lonikatra police station limits. The second victim is yet to be identified. Both succumbed to their injuries while undergoing treatment at the Trivediganj Community Health Center.

Police forces were already present at the site due to the expected crowd during the religious gathering. Authorities are reviewing safety protocols at the temple to prevent similar incidents in the future.
