Amit Mishra Announces Retirement from All Forms of Cricket.
Former India wrist-spinner Amit Mishra announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on Thursday, September 4, bringing an end to a remarkable 25-year career.
Mishra represented India in 22 Tests, 36 ODIs, and 10 T20Is, claiming a total of 156 international wickets. He made his ODI debut in 2003 against South Africa, taking 1/29 in five overs, and his Test debut in 2008 against Australia, impressing with a five-wicket haul (5/71) and match figures of 7/106, playing a key role in India’s 320-run victory. The 42-year-old last appeared for India in 2017 during the 3rd T20I against England in Bengaluru, finishing with figures of 1/23.
In the Indian Premier League (IPL), Mishra was a prolific performer, ranking as the eighth-highest wicket-taker in tournament history with 174 wickets from 162 matches. He also holds the record for the most IPL hat-tricks, achieving the feat three times in 2008, 2011, and 2013. Mishra last played in the IPL for Lucknow Super Giants in 2024, featuring in a single match and picking up one wicket.
Mishra was part of India’s ICC Champions Trophy-winning squad in 2013 and took 10 wickets in the 2014 T20 World Cup, where India finished as runners-up. He also equalled Javagal Srinath’s world record for most wickets (18) in a bilateral ODI series against New Zealand in 2016.
Reflecting on his career, Mishra wrote on X:
“Today, after 25 years, I announce my retirement from cricket — a game that has been my first love, my teacher, and my greatest source of joy. This journey has been filled with countless emotions — moments of pride, hardship, learning, and love. I am deeply grateful to the BCCI, Haryana Cricket Association, my coaches, support staff, colleagues, and most importantly, the fans, whose faith and support gave me strength at every step.”
“From the struggles and sacrifices in the early days to the unforgettable moments on the field, every chapter has shaped me as a cricketer and a person. To my family — thank you for standing by my side. To my teammates and mentors — thank you for making this journey special. Cricket has given me everything, and now I look forward to giving back to the game that made me who I am.”
While Mishra’s playing days are over, fans will remember him as one of India’s finest wrist-spinners and a stalwart of the IPL. Whether he chooses to feature in foreign T20 leagues remains to be seen.
