Stokes Dismisses Bumrah Factor, Says England Ready for Team Challenge.

Leeds, June 19 — England captain Ben Stokes downplayed the threat posed by India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah ahead of the opening Test at Headingley, asserting that his team isn’t fazed by any individual, no matter how world-class.

Addressing the media two days before the first match of the five-Test series, Stokes said England respects Bumrah’s skill but isn’t intimidated. “There’s no fear,” Stokes said. “We face top-quality opposition all the time. Bumrah’s a class act, no doubt, but fear isn’t part of how we play.”

Stokes added that in a long Test series, individual brilliance alone is never enough.

“One bowler won’t decide a five-match series. Success comes from all 11 players contributing. That’s true for us and for India.”

Bumrah’s Edge Over England — Especially Stokes
Stokes’ comments come despite Bumrah’s formidable record against England. The Indian fast bowler has claimed 60 wickets in 14 Tests against them at an impressive average of 22.16. In England alone, he has taken 37 wickets in 9 matches at 26.27.

The Bumrah-Stokes battle in particular has been one-sided in recent encounters. During England’s last tour of India in 2024, Bumrah repeatedly got the better of the England skipper with his relentless lines and angles from around the wicket — a duel that may once again shape key moments in the series.

England Lock In Playing XI for Series Opener
England have named their XI early for the Headingley Test, opting for a mix of experience and fresh faces. Ollie Pope returns at No. 3, while 23-year-old Jamie Smith will make his debut as wicketkeeper. England have gone with three seamers — Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse, and Josh Tongue — and one frontline spinner in Shoaib Bashir.

The Test series begins June 21, with both sides eager to lay down an early marker.
