England Make Sensational Start to Women’s World Cup with 10-Wicket Win Over South Africa.
Four-time champions England began their Women’s World Cup campaign in style, thrashing South Africa by 10 wickets at Barsapara Stadium, Guwahati. Coming off a 2-1 series win in Pakistan, the Proteas were no match for the dominant English side, who wrapped up the chase in just 34.5 overs.
The victory ranks as England’s third-biggest Women’s World Cup win in terms of balls remaining, following a 243-ball triumph over South Africa in 2013 (Cuttack) and a 10-wicket win against India in 1982 (Nelson) with 231 balls to spare. The emphatic win also saw England leapfrog Australia to top the points table with a net run rate of +3.773.
Bowlers Run Through South Africa
Opting to bat first, South Africa collapsed for just 69 in 20.4 overs — their second-lowest Women’s World Cup total after being bowled out for 51 against New Zealand in 2009.
Linsey Smith made an instant impact, dismissing Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits in her opening overs. Lauren Bell removed Sune Luus, and Smith claimed Marizanne Kapp. Captain Nat Sciver-Brunt struck twice, sending back Anneke Bosch and Chloe Tryon. Sinalo Jafta was the only South African batter to resist with 22 runs before Sophie Ecclestone bowled her. Ecclestone and Charlie Dean finished off the tail, leaving no batter besides Jafta in double figures.
England Cruise Home
Chasing a small total, England’s openers Tammy Beaumont and Amy Jones guided their team comfortably to victory with 215 balls to spare. Beaumont remained unbeaten on 18, while Jones scored 40 off 50, combining for a 73-run opening partnership — the first 50-plus opening stand of this World Cup.
South Africa’s brief chance came at 55 when Masabata Klaas dropped a catch off her own bowling, but it never threatened England’s chase. With a disciplined bowling attack and composed batting, England ensured there were no anxious moments.
South Africa now turn their attention to New Zealand, led by Sophie Devine, in their next match on October 6 at Holkar Stadium, Indore.
