Europe on Alert: Deadly Wildfires Displace Thousands Amid Extreme Heat

Wildfires Kill Three Firefighters, Trigger Mass Evacuations Across Italy, France and Spain

Deadly wildfires continued to sweep across parts of Italy, France and Spain on Wednesday, claiming the lives of three firefighters and forcing thousands of people to evacuate as extreme heat, strong winds and dry conditions fueled rapidly spreading flames.

Southern Europe is once again in the grip of an intense heatwave, with temperatures exceeding 40°C in several regions. Experts have warned that climate change is increasing the likelihood and severity of extreme weather events, including prolonged heatwaves and destructive wildfires.

Sicily and Calabria Battle Hundreds of Fires

In Sicily, around 6,000 firefighters, forest guards and civil protection personnel were deployed to combat dozens of wildfires burning across the island. Regional President Renato Schifani said nearly 50 fires remained active despite the use of firefighting aircraft. Italy’s Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi confirmed that a firefighter died after falling ill while responding to one of the blazes.

Authorities described the situation as critical, with soaring temperatures and parched vegetation allowing fires to spread quickly. In neighbouring Calabria, officials reported more than 160 fires, alleging that many had been deliberately started. Investigators are examining suspected cases of arson as emergency crews continue efforts to contain the flames.

France Struggles to Contain Major Blazes

France is also battling multiple large wildfires in its southwest, where two firefighters were killed while responding to a blaze near Bordeaux Airport.

The fires have forced thousands of residents and tourists to leave their homes and campsites. One blaze scorched around 2,000 hectares in the Arcachon Basin near Bordeaux, while another in the Var region burned approximately 2,550 hectares after spreading rapidly through dense forests.

Nearly 1,000 firefighters, supported by specialised aircraft, were deployed to contain the flames. Authorities evacuated about 700 residents from Le Porge and relocated more than 3,000 campers, while evacuation orders were expanded in several areas as the fires advanced.

Overall, around 12,000 people have been evacuated in southwest France.

Spain Orders Fresh Evacuations

In Spain, emergency authorities evacuated several districts around the city of Toledo, south of Madrid, after a rapidly advancing wildfire threatened residential areas. Mobile emergency alerts were issued to residents, major roads were closed, and three villages were evacuated. People in a fourth village were instructed to remain indoors until further notice due to heavy smoke and the advancing fire.

The latest blaze comes as firefighters continue battling another massive wildfire around 100 kilometres north of Madrid, which has already destroyed about 32,000 hectares of land.

According to the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), wildfires have burned more than 393,000 hectares across Spain in 2025, marking one of the country’s most destructive wildfire seasons in recent history.

Heatwave Intensifies Fire Risk

Authorities across southern Europe remain on high alert as persistent heat, dry conditions and strong winds continue to create ideal conditions for wildfires. Emergency officials have urged residents to follow evacuation instructions, avoid forested areas and remain vigilant as firefighters work around the clock to bring the blazes under control.
