EU Chief Rejects US ‘Interference’ in European Politics.
European Council President Antonio Costa on Monday rejected any attempt by the United States to meddle in Europe’s political affairs, responding to Washington’s newly released National Security Strategy. “What we cannot accept is the threat to interfere in European politics,” Costa said at a Brussels conference.
The US strategy criticized Europe as over-regulated and lacking confidence, warning of “civilizational erasure” from immigration. It also suggested the US would support political movements aligned with far-right agendas, aiming to influence European domestic politics.
Costa said, “The United States cannot replace European citizens in choosing which parties are good or bad… Europe must define its own vision of freedom of expression.”
While noting long-standing differences with Washington on issues like climate change, Costa stressed that Europe must remain sovereign. He also voiced concern that Russia welcomed the strategy and said its approach to Ukraine ignored Europe’s push for a just and durable peace.
