Faridabad Woman Found Dead in Pit Two Months After ‘Elopement’ Claim by In-Laws; Murder Case Registered.
The body of Tanu Rajput, a 24-year-old woman reported missing two months ago, was discovered in a 10-foot-deep pit outside her marital home in Roshan Nagar, Faridabad, on Friday. The shocking recovery came after her in-laws, who had claimed she had eloped, were interrogated by police.
Tanu’s body was found buried beneath a newly cemented lane next to her home and had to be exhumed using an excavator. Police believe she was murdered by her husband and in-laws, who attempted to cover up the crime.
Murder Disguised as Elopement
Tanu, originally from Khera village in Uttar Pradesh’s Firozabad district, had been married to Arun Singh for less than two years. She was reported missing on April 25 when Arun filed a police complaint claiming she was mentally challenged and had run away. However, investigators later found this narrative to be a smokescreen.
After her disappearance, Tanu’s family raised suspicions over the elopement claim, saying she had no history of such behavior and had previously reported domestic harassment.
Following a dead-end investigation, police detained Arun’s father, Bhoop Singh (50), for questioning. During sustained interrogation, Bhoop allegedly confessed to the murder and secret burial of Tanu in the soak pit outside the house.
Autopsy and Case Status
The body, identified by family members through clothing, was sent to Badshah Khan Civil Hospital for post-mortem examination. A forensic report is awaited.
Police have now registered a murder case under Sections 103(1), 3(5), and 61 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Four individuals — including Tanu’s husband, father-in-law, mother-in-law, and another relative — have been taken into custody, while Arun is currently absconding.
Allegations of Dowry Harassment
Tanu’s sister, Preeti Rajput, alleged that her sister had been subjected to mental and physical abuse by her husband’s family soon after the marriage in 2023. “They demanded jewellery and money. Tanu stayed with us for a year due to the harassment. When she returned to her in-laws, they isolated her completely — not even letting her speak to us,” Preeti said.
She further claimed that on April 23, the family was told Tanu had eloped — a claim that never aligned with her sister’s character or condition.
Pit Was Concealed Under Drainage Work
Neighbours revealed that the pit had been dug around the time Tanu was reported missing, allegedly for drain repairs. Soon after, it was filled and covered with a concrete slab, raising suspicions in hindsight.
Inspector Satya Parkash, SHO of Palla Police Station, said initial findings point toward dowry or a suspected extramarital affair as possible motives. “The investigation is active. The victim’s family has denied the claim that she was mentally unstable. We will confirm the timeline and exact cause of death after the forensic report,” he added.
