Sangli Girl, 17, Dies After Assault by Father Over Low NEET Mock Test Marks.

A 17-year-old student from Sangli, Maharashtra, died after being allegedly beaten by her father for scoring low marks in a NEET mock test, highlighting once again the pressures students face during competitive exam preparation.

The student, Sadhna Bhonsle, was preparing for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) while studying in Class 12. Known for her academic excellence, she had scored 92.6% in her Class 10 board exams.

However, when she recently scored poorly in a mock test, her father, Dhondiram Bhonsle, a schoolteacher, allegedly assaulted her in anger. According to police, he beat her with a stick at their home. Sadhna sustained serious head injuries and was rushed to Ushakal Hospital in Sangli, where she died before receiving treatment.

Her mother filed a complaint with the local police on June 22, stating that her husband’s assault led to their daughter’s death. The father was arrested the same day and has been remanded to police custody until June 24.

“The accused has confessed to the assault. A case has been registered, and the investigation is ongoing,” said a police official.

The tragic incident has sparked concern over rising academic pressure on students and the consequences of extreme parental expectations. Experts and educators have stressed the need for greater mental health support, open family dialogue, and a rethinking of how academic success is defined in high-stakes environments like NEET.
