A ferry carrying more than 350 people sank near a southern Philippine island early Monday, killing at least 13 and leaving dozens missing, officials said.
Rescue teams have so far saved at least 244 passengers, authorities added. The M/V Trisha Kerstin 3, an inter-island cargo and passenger ferry, was travelling from Zamboanga to southern Jolo island in Sulu province with 332 passengers and 27 crew members when it suffered a technical malfunction and sank shortly after midnight.
The ferry went down in calm weather about one nautical mile (nearly 2 km) from the island village of Baluk-baluk in Basilan province, coast guard commander Romel Dua told The Associated Press.
