‘Fight Every Ball’: Gambhir, Gill Set the Tone Ahead of England Test Series.

With the England tour just around the corner, Team India’s new leadership duo—head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shubman Gill—set an intense, purpose-driven tone during a team huddle ahead of their first full practice session.

India’s squad is now complete following the conclusion of the India A vs England Lions series. As the players assembled, Gambhir welcomed fresh faces Sai Sudharsan and Arshdeep Singh, and also acknowledged the return of Karun Nair. He then addressed the team with a challenge—and an opportunity.

“There are two ways to look at this tour. One—we’re without three of our most experienced players: Rohit, Virat and Ashwin. Or two—we have a phenomenal chance to do something special for the country,” Gambhir said.

“When I look around this group, I see hunger, passion and commitment. If we make sacrifices, leave our comfort zones, and fight—not just every day, but every session, every hour, every ball—we can make this a memorable tour. That mindset starts now. Playing for India is the biggest honour there is.”

Captain Shubman Gill built on that message, urging players to treat every practice with intention.

“Let’s make every net session count. Put a bit of pressure on yourself while training. It’s not about just surviving,” Gill said.

“Let’s use the nets to discover our game—how we respond when under pressure, both as bowlers and batters. Play every ball with purpose.”

India’s five-match Test series against England starts June 20. With the absence of senior leaders, the tour marks a significant test—and an exciting new era—under Gill’s captaincy and Gambhir’s stewardship.
