US President Donald Trump has publicly urged Netflix to remove board member Susan Rice, warning the streaming giant to “fire her or pay the consequences.”
Trump’s demand followed remarks by Rice suggesting that corporations perceived as aligning themselves with him could face political repercussions if Democrats regain power. Speaking on a podcast, Rice said companies, media outlets and law firms that “take a knee” to Trump may later be held accountable.
“They’re going to be held accountable,” Rice said, adding that Democrats would not necessarily “play by the old rules” in the future. Rice served as national security adviser and US ambassador to the United Nations under former President Barack Obama and later held a senior domestic policy role in the administration of Joe Biden. She rejoined Netflix’s board in 2023 after leaving the Biden White House.
In a social media post, Trump did not clarify what “consequences” Netflix might face. However, he has previously criticised major broadcasters over content and coverage he views as hostile.
Netflix did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The episode underscores rising political pressure on large corporations as tensions between business leaders and national political figures intensify ahead of the next US election cycle.
