An Andhra Pradesh court on Friday sentenced five men to death for the brutal 2015 murder of former Chittoor Mayor Katari Anuradha and her husband, Katari Mohan.

The double murder took place on November 17, 2015, inside the Chittoor Municipal Corporation office, sending shockwaves across the state. The prime accused, Sriram Chandrasekhar — Mohan’s nephew — was convicted along with four others: Govinda Swami Srinivasaiah Venkatachalapathy (alias Venkatesh), Jayaprakash Reddy (alias Jayareddy), Manjunath (alias Manju), and Muniratnam Venkatesh.

According to the prosecution, the men entered the office disguised in burqas before attacking the couple with knives and daggers. Katari Anuradha was also shot dead during the assault. Police said the crime stemmed from a long-standing family dispute.

Tight security was in place around the court during the pronouncement of the verdict, with only court staff permitted inside and restrictions imposed on public gatherings or celebrations.
