France will deploy two frigates to the Red Sea as part of the European Union’s naval mission Aspides, French President Emmanuel Macron said on Monday.
Speaking after talks in Cyprus with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Macron said the mission is being designed as a strictly defensive operation aimed at escorting vessels and protecting maritime traffic.
“We are in the process of setting up a purely defensive escort mission that must be prepared together with both European and non-European states,” he said.
