Macron Urges Venezuelan Opposition Leader to Oversee Power Transition.
French President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday said Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo González Urrutia should help manage the transition of power in Venezuela following the US capture of President Nicolás Maduro.
Macron stressed that the transition “must be peaceful, democratic, and respectful of the will of the Venezuelan people,” expressing hope that González, elected in 2024, would ensure a swift and orderly handover.
He also spoke with opposition leader and 2025 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Corina Machado, voicing full support for her call to release and protect political prisoners under Maduro’s regime. “France stands with all Venezuelans seeking a democratic transition that respects the sovereign will of the people,” Macron said.
