When Royal Challengers Bengaluru faced Mumbai Indians in their WPL 2026 opener, their batting frailties were glaring.
Nadine de Klerk’s late heroics saved the innings, but without Ellyse Perry, RCB’s most accomplished batter, the middle order looked alarmingly exposed. Radha Yadav, with a top score of just 27, came in at No. 5, highlighting how vulnerable the lineup could be under pressure.
Fast-forward through a series of tense matches, and RCB have executed a remarkable turnaround. What was once their weakest link is now a source of strength. The batting fires in rhythm with a lethal bowling attack, young players are stepping up in crucial moments, and unexpected performances have shifted momentum. Today, RCB sit unbeaten atop the points table — a team transformed from early doubts to WPL 2026 front-runners.
Gautami Naik: From rookie to game-changer
Identifying a glaring batting gap, RCB took a bold decision — awarding maiden WPL caps to young Gautami Naik. Her first outing was modest, but her second innings was historic. Against Gujarat Giants, Gautami became the first uncapped Indian to score a WPL fifty, blasting 73 off 55 balls, with seven boundaries and a towering six. Her knock powered RCB to a 61-run victory and earned her the Player of the Match award.
Mentorship played a role: Gautami had previously shared the field with captain Smriti Mandhana for Ratnagiri Jets in the Maharashtra Premier League, giving her the familiarity and confidence to shine. More than filling a gap, she transformed it into a potent weapon.
Radha Yadav: Unexpected depth
RCB’s batting revival also owes much to Radha Yadav. Traditionally valued for her left-arm spin, she had rarely been seen as a match-defining batter. That perception changed dramatically against Gujarat Giants in Navi Mumbai.
Coming in at 43 for four, Radha combined calm intent with aggression, rotating the strike and punishing loose deliveries. She scored her maiden WPL fifty off just 36 balls and finished with 66 off 47, rescuing the innings and shifting momentum. The Player of the Match award reflected her impact, but the greater gain was strategic: RCB unearthed a dependable middle-order batter, adding crucial depth.
Momentum and title ambitions
RCB have already secured a playoff berth, but their ambitions go further. After three seasons without finishing atop the points table, the team is now breaking new ground. A five-match winning streak has built momentum, while the bowling — led by Lauren Bell, Shreyanka Patil, Nadine de Klerk, and Sayali Satghare — remains rock-solid.
Most importantly, the batting unit that once threatened to collapse under pressure has grown in confidence and cohesion. If this upward trajectory continues, RCB may have found the blueprint for a historic second WPL title.
