From Trolls to Triumph: Temba Bavuma Rewrites South Africa’s Test Story

7

Temba Bavuma has long faced scrutiny over his height, often becoming the target of mockery from spectators, including during the recent Kolkata Test. But the South African captain has continued to assert his value through performance and leadership, playing a central role in his team’s resurgence in Test cricket.

Resilience Under Pressure
Ahead of the India tour, Bavuma said South Africa were drawing lessons from New Zealand — the only team to win a Test in India in more than a decade. That statement was widely viewed as optimistic, but South Africa backed it with a determined display at Eden Gardens.

Bavuma’s unbeaten 55 in the second innings, combined with a 44-run partnership with Corbin Bosch, helped stabilise the chase at a critical moment. His decisive catch to dismiss Axar Patel — who was threatening to swing the contest — proved pivotal in South Africa’s eventual 30-run victory.

The win ended a 15-year wait for a South African Test success in India.

A Growing Leadership Record
South Africa’s performance in the ongoing 2023–25 World Test Championship has been marked by consistency, including a seven-match winning streak that carried them into the final against Australia. They went on to win the title at Lord’s, marking one of the most significant achievements in the country’s Test history.

Bavuma now has ten victories in eleven Tests as captain and sits among South Africa’s five most successful Test leaders, behind Graeme Smith, Hansie Cronje, Faf du Plessis and Shaun Pollock.

Focus Shifts to Guwahati
Despite the morale-boosting win in Kolkata, the bigger target for South Africa remains a Test series win in India — something they last achieved 25 years ago.

The team now has five days to prepare for the second Test in Guwahati, beginning November 22. While they will assess Kagiso Rabada’s fitness and address areas of concern from the first match, they enter the contest with momentum and the confidence of having secured a rare away victory.

A series win would mark one of the most significant milestones in Bavuma’s captaincy and in South Africa’s modern Test history.
