Ganga Rises Sharply In Varanasi, All 84 Ghats Underwater As Danger Mark Nears

The Ganga continued its rapid rise in Varanasi on Monday, submerging all 84 ghats and inundating several low-lying areas, as authorities intensified flood preparedness measures across the city.

The river was flowing at around 69.40 metres, while the warning level stands at 70.262 metres and the danger mark at 71.26 metres. With the water rising by nearly 4 cm every hour, officials are keeping a close watch on the situation.

VARANASI GHATS UNDER WATER

The rising river has submerged several well-known landmarks along the ghats. At Namo Ghat, the iconic ‘Namaste’ statue was almost completely covered by water.

Several ghats have been marooned, while floodwaters also entered the River Police Commissionerate office.

Boat operations have been suspended as a precautionary step following the rapid rise in the river level.

The situation has also affected the Varuna river. Its waters began flowing backwards on Sunday as the Ganga rose, resulting in water entering low-lying settlements along the riverbanks.

People living in vulnerable locations have started shifting towards safer and elevated areas as the flood threat grows.

61 RELIEF CAMPS IDENTIFIED

The district administration has accelerated its preparations for a possible flood emergency.

Officials have identified 61 relief camps across Varanasi, with arrangements being made for accommodation, food, drinking water, sanitation, electricity and medical assistance.

Twenty-one flood monitoring posts have also been established to keep track of water levels and conditions in vulnerable areas.

For rescue and relief operations, authorities have arranged 198 boats.

NDRF TEAMS KEPT READY

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Water Police and Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) have been placed on standby to respond if the situation worsens.

Officials are also preparing for the safety of livestock in flood-prone areas. Arrangements include fodder and drinking water, along with facilities to shift animals to safer locations.

With the Ganga approaching its warning level and continuing to rise quickly, authorities are maintaining heightened surveillance across Varanasi and urging residents in vulnerable areas to remain cautious.
