Gaza Death Toll Rises to 60 Amid Israeli Strikes Ahead of US Mediation

Israeli Strikes Kill 60 in Gaza Ahead of Key US Ceasefire Talks.

Intensifying its military campaign in Gaza, Israel launched a fresh wave of airstrikes on Monday, killing at least 60 people, just hours before top officials were set to meet US counterparts for ceasefire negotiations.

The Israeli bombardment targeted multiple locations across Gaza, including Gaza City’s coastal area, where a strike on a beachside café killed at least 22 people, according to Palestinian health officials. Casualties reportedly include women, children, and journalists.

The assault comes as Israel’s Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer and National Security Adviser Tzachi Hanegbi travel to Washington to meet senior Biden administration officials. The talks aim to revive a stalled ceasefire and hostage release deal, with US President Joe Biden pushing for an agreement to end months of devastating conflict.

Amid the escalating violence, the Israeli military issued fresh evacuation orders across northern Gaza, triggering further displacement. Residents described scenes of chaos and fear as tanks advanced and bombs fell despite reports of a potential truce.

“In the media, we hear about peace; in reality, it’s nonstop destruction,” said one resident in Gaza City.

Israel maintains that its operations target Hamas infrastructure, but rights groups and local witnesses say civilian areas continue to bear the brunt. More than 56,000 Palestinians have been killed since the conflict erupted in October, Gaza’s health authorities report.

Meanwhile, international pressure is mounting. Austria’s foreign minister, visiting Jerusalem, warned that ongoing civilian suffering in Gaza risks isolating Israel diplomatically. She urged immediate humanitarian access and a ceasefire.

The latest flare-up threatens to derail weeks of behind-the-scenes negotiations. Hamas has signaled openness to a phased truce deal but insists on a permanent ceasefire and full Israeli withdrawal—conditions Israel has repeatedly rejected.

With both sides dug in, and the death toll mounting, Monday’s airstrikes cast a shadow over upcoming ceasefire talks in Washington, leaving hopes for a breakthrough hanging in the balance.
