Gen Z Leans Into Yoga for Peace of Mind on International Yoga Day

Why Gen Z Is Turning to Yoga for Mental Health.

Feeling anxious, unfocused, or emotionally drained? You’re far from alone. In today’s always-on world, stress has become a constant companion for many—especially young adults. But more and more of them are finding relief not through apps or quick fixes, but through something ancient: yoga.

On this International Day of Yoga, there’s growing awareness that yoga isn’t just about flexibility or fitness. It’s also about mental clarity, emotional balance, and inner calm—qualities that are becoming increasingly rare and valuable.

A recent study in the Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies found that yoga practitioners—particularly those practicing Ashtanga—reported significantly lower levels of anxiety, depression, and stress than non-practitioners. The key? A holistic approach that combines movement (asanas), breathwork (pranayama), and meditation to restore mental equilibrium.

“Mental yoga is about cultivating a steady, peaceful mind,” says Sadguru Madhusudan Sai, a teacher and expert in the practice. “It empowers people to reconnect with their inner self and shift from external noise to internal clarity.”

Yoga is resonating deeply with Gen Z, many of whom are searching for healthier ways to cope with burnout, digital fatigue, and emotional overload. Meher Munjal, a Delhi-based yoga teacher and sound healer at Yoga Connect, says she has seen a surge in young adults using yoga as a tool for mental wellness. “It helps regulate mood, calms the nervous system, and supports better decision-making,” she explains.

Among the most effective and accessible practices, she adds, is Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutation). “It stretches and energizes the whole body, includes breathing, and is easy to do at home. Even a few rounds can shift your mental state.”

As more young people explore the mental side of yoga, they’re discovering it’s not just a workout—it’s a way to slow down, breathe deeply, and feel more in control. And perhaps that’s exactly what this generation needs.
