Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel is facing backlash over a controversial joke about First Lady Melania Trump, with Donald Trump calling on ABC to fire him. Actor George Clooney has now stepped in to defend the comedian.

Clooney backs Kimmel, urges tone in rhetoric

Speaking at the Chaplin Award Gala, Clooney said the outrage over Kimmel’s remark should be viewed in context, comparing it to comments by White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt that were also interpreted literally despite being intended as jokes.

Clooney argued that while jokes are part of political satire, increasingly heated rhetoric across the political spectrum is becoming “a little dangerous.” He stressed the importance of a free press holding those in power accountable, adding that leaders are not expected to enjoy scrutiny.

The remark and the backlash

The controversy stems from a segment on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, where Kimmel joked that Melania Trump had “the glow of an expectant widow.” The comment resurfaced after a shooting incident at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner in Washington, where a gunman attempted to breach security.

Melania Trump condemned the remark as “hateful and violent rhetoric,” calling Kimmel a “coward” and urging ABC to take action. The president echoed the demand, saying the comedian should be removed from the network.

ABC has not issued an official response so far.

Wider debate over political comedy

The episode has reignited debate over the boundaries of political satire in the US, especially at a time of heightened tensions. Clooney, identifying himself as a Democrat, said that while satire is fair game, political discourse on all sides needs to be toned down to avoid escalating divisions.
