Govt Considering Reconstitution, Term Extension of Parliamentary Committees.

New Delhi — The government is weighing the option of reconstituting Parliamentary Standing Committees while also exploring the possibility of extending the tenure of their existing members.

Parliamentary Standing Committees, which play a crucial role in scrutinising bills, policies and budgetary allocations, are typically reconstituted every year. Sources indicate that discussions are underway on whether to maintain the current structure for a longer term in order to ensure continuity of work, especially on subjects that require sustained examination.

Officials familiar with the matter said the decision could involve either extending the present committees by a few months or going for a complete reshuffle and fresh nominations. A final call is expected soon.

The debate comes at a time when several committees are handling sensitive matters, including economic reforms, defence modernisation, and social welfare policies. Supporters of an extension argue that it would help committees conclude detailed reports already in progress, while others stress the importance of inducting fresh members for broader representation.

Parliamentary Standing Committees consist of members from both Houses of Parliament and are reconstituted by the Speaker of the Lok Sabha and the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.
