The post-mortem of senior Haryana IPS officer Y Puran Kumar is set to be conducted after his family finally gave consent, ending days of uncertainty surrounding one of the most high-profile police deaths in recent years.
The officer’s last rites are scheduled for 4:00 p.m. in Chandigarh on Wednesday, October 15, as the case continues to reverberate through Haryana’s police and administrative circles.
Y Puran Kumar Suicide Case
Y Puran Kumar, a 2001-batch IPS officer and Inspector General at the Police Training Centre in Rohtak, was found dead at his Chandigarh residence on 7 October 2025. He reportedly died from a gunshot wound, allegedly self-inflicted with his service revolver.
A nine-page suicide note recovered at the scene named 12 to 16 senior IAS and IPS officers, including Haryana DGP Shatrujeet Kapur and Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarnia, accusing them of caste-based harassment and administrative persecution. The note sparked national outrage, highlighting claims of systemic discrimination against Kumar due to his Scheduled Caste background.
Kumar’s wife, IAS officer Amneet P Kumar, had initially refused post-mortem clearance until an FIR was registered against those named in the note, demanding inclusion of charges under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. This standoff delayed the autopsy for several days. Authorities confirmed that Chandigarh Police, along with a six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT), will now oversee the process.
Investigation Challenges
Investigators have faced hurdles, particularly regarding access to Kumar’s laptop, which the family withheld citing privacy concerns. They have, however, agreed to provide cloned forensic data to aid the probe.
Another Suicide
In a surprising development, ASI Sandeep Kumar of Rohtak’s Cyber Cell died by suicide days after Puran Kumar’s death. His three-page note and video alleged that Kumar was involved in corruption and “used caste politics to deflect accountability.” Sandeep had reportedly been investigating one of Kumar’s aides, head constable Sushil Kumar, previously arrested on corruption charges.
Administrative Fallout
The suicides have prompted major reshuffles in the Haryana Police. DGP Shatrujeet Kapur has been sent on leave, and several officers named in the note have been transferred. The state government has ordered a comprehensive forensic and administrative probe into both deaths, as the investigation continues to focus on allegations of caste discrimination and corruption.
