Zohran Mamdani Defies Trump’s Deportation Threats: “He’s Attacking Me Because I Fight for the People.”

New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani has delivered a strong and defiant response to former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent threats to have him arrested, deported, and denaturalised. In a powerful speech and social media video, Mamdani accused Trump of trying to silence dissent by targeting him personally—because of what he stands for, not just who he is.

“Yesterday, Donald Trump said that I should be arrested, deported, and stripped of my citizenship,” Mamdani said at a rally held at the Hotel and Gaming Trades Council headquarters. “He said that about me—not just as the son of immigrants, not just as someone who would be the first Muslim and South Asian mayor of this city—but because I fight for working people.”

Mamdani, 33, has become a rising progressive voice in New York politics. A staunch critic of immigration enforcement practices, he has pledged to reduce city cooperation with federal agencies like ICE—a stance that drew the ire of Trump during his July 1 visit to a Florida detention center. In response to Mamdani’s position, Trump said, “Well then, we’ll have to arrest him,” and added, “We’ll be watching him very carefully on behalf of the nation.”

Trump also falsely questioned Mamdani’s citizenship, claiming, “A lot of people are saying he’s here illegally,” despite Mamdani being a naturalised U.S. citizen.

“He Wants a Distraction”
Mamdani pointed out that Trump’s personal attacks are part of a broader strategy to distract from real issues—especially the controversial “One Big Beautiful Bill” set to be voted on in Congress. The bill, Mamdani said, would gut healthcare, reduce food assistance, and harm working-class Americans.

“This is about avoiding accountability,” Mamdani said. “Rather than explain how his economic policies will strip basic needs from millions of Americans, Trump chooses to come after me, to distract and divide.”

Standing Firm
Despite the threats, Mamdani made it clear he would not be intimidated. “I won’t be silenced. I won’t back down,” he declared. “New Yorkers need a mayor who fights for justice—not one who caves to fear and hate.”

The confrontation between Mamdani and Trump has sparked widespread discussion across social media and political circles, highlighting how immigration, dissent, and identity remain flashpoints in American politics.

As Mamdani continues his campaign, his message is clear: “We will not be afraid. We will organize, resist, and win.”
