Heavy rain pounds Mumbai, streets waterlogged, flights and local trains affected

Heavy rain and thunderstorms lashed Mumbai on Monday morning as the monsoon continues to advance after hitting Kerala on Saturday.

The rainfall caused widespread waterlogging and disrupted transport and flight operations. Several low-lying areas, including Kurla, Sion, Dadar, and Parel, were severely affected, with visuals showing vehicles wading through flooded streets early in the day.

Local train services across all three major lines- Central, Western, and Harbour- are running behind schedule due to the heavy downpour battering the city.

On Monday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a warning for Mumbai on Monday morning, stating that thunderstorm activity accompanied by lightning, intense spells of rain, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 50–60 kmph is very likely to occur at isolated places in the city over the next 3 to 4 hours.

From 6:00 am to 7:00 am, significant rainfall was recorded in Mumbai, with Nariman Point Fire Station receiving 40 mm, Grant Road Eye Hospital 36 mm, and Memonwada Fire Station 35 mm. Other notable rainfall figures included Colaba Fire Station (31 mm), C Ward Office (35 mm), and Byculla Fire Station (21 mm).

The weather department also issued an orange alert for Maharashtra’s Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall. A yellow alert is also in place for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and other districts.
