Andre Russell Explains Shock IPL Retirement: “Being an All-Rounder Is Tough in This League”
West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell has broken his silence on his unexpected IPL retirement ahead of the 2026 mini-auction. After 12 seasons with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and being released in December, the 37-year-old stunned fans by announcing he would no longer play in the league.
Speaking to Cricbuzz, Russell cited the physical and mental demands of being an all-rounder as a key reason. “With the number of games, travel, practice sessions, and gym work, it’s always challenging to stay fresh and perform at your best,” he said. “Batting, bowling, fielding — as an all-rounder, you have to give your best in every department, and that’s tough to maintain throughout such a big league.”
Russell also emphasized that he could never play only as a batter. “My batting complements my bowling and vice versa. I’ve always enjoyed contributing in both areas and that’s how I want to play,” he added. While he steps away from the IPL, Russell will continue in T20 leagues worldwide. In his IPL career, he played 140 matches, scored 2,651 runs at a strike rate of 174.18, and took 123 wickets at an average of 23.28, with best figures of 5/15.
Russell’s IPL journey was highlighted by two MVP awards (2015, 2019) and two IPL titles with KKR (2014, 2024). Following his retirement, he will stay with KKR as the team’s power coach for the upcoming season.
