BJP-Shiv Sena Alliance Ends Thackeray Rule, Takes Control of Mumbai.

The BJP-Shiv Sena alliance has ended the Thackerays’ 28-year hold over Mumbai’s civic body, marking a historic shift in the city’s political landscape. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis emerged as the dominant force, with the BJP winning 89 of 227 BMC wards and its ally, the Shinde-led Shiv Sena, securing 29 seats—taking the alliance total to 118, comfortably above the majority mark.

Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena won 65 seats, a significant decline from 84 in 2017, while Raj Thackeray’s MNS managed only six seats, and the Sharad Pawar faction of the NCP won a single seat. The Congress, allied with the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi, secured 26 seats, and AIMIM increased its tally to eight.

The election highlighted a battle between Hindutva politics and Marathi identity. The Thackerays’ focus on regional pride failed to outweigh the BJP-led alliance’s combined strategy of development messaging, organisational strength, and ideological clarity.

With this victory, Fadnavis consolidates his authority in Maharashtra politics, positioning the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance as the dominant urban force ahead of future state elections.
