How to Stay Calm: Simple Ways to Tackle Stress and Anxiety

In daily life, people set goals—advancing a career, staying fit, or building meaningful relationships.

While keeping busy can be rewarding, understanding why you pursue these goals is key to managing stress. When your purpose is clear, motivation stays high, and everyday challenges feel less overwhelming. Knowing your “why” helps you focus on what matters instead of worrying about small setbacks.

Be Kind to Yourself
Dr. Gauri Raut, Clinical Psychologist at Dr. L H Hiranandani Hospital, Mumbai, says self-compassion is one of the most effective ways to reduce anxiety. “Treat yourself with patience and understanding,” she advises. “Instead of being overly critical, acknowledge your efforts and the progress you’ve made—it makes a real difference.”

Stop Comparing Yourself to Others
Stress often comes from unrealistic expectations and constant comparison. “Competing with others adds pressure,” Dr. Raut notes. “Focus on your own growth instead. Compete with yourself, not someone else.” Accepting yourself as you are builds emotional stability and happiness. “Authenticity is the key to long-term mental well-being,” she adds.

Know When to Seek Help
Excessive stress can leave you drained. Occasional stress is normal, but constant anxiety can affect mental health. “Pause, relax, and be kind to yourself,” says Dr. Raut. “If anxiety starts interfering with daily life, seeking professional help is a positive step, not a weakness.”

By understanding your motivations, practising self-kindness, and avoiding unnecessary comparisons, you can manage stress effectively and lead a more balanced, fulfilling life.
