Hyderabad lashed by overnight downpour; 3 missing as streets flood, traffic paralysed.
Hyderabad witnessed a relentless overnight downpour on Sunday, leaving large parts of the city waterlogged and traffic crawling through submerged roads.
According to the Telangana Development Planning Society, Siddipet’s Narayanraopet received the heaviest rainfall at 245.5 mm between 8:30 am on September 14 and 8:00 am on September 15. Rangareddy’s Abdullapurmet-Thatianaram recorded 128 mm, while Hyderabad’s Musheerabad logged between 114.5 mm and 124 mm at various monitoring stations.
The sudden cloudburst inundated arterial roads, forcing police and municipal teams to divert vehicles and deploy pumps to drain water. Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Mayor Vijayalaxmi Gadwal said she was “personally monitoring operations” from the command control centre in Banjara Hills.
Tragedy struck when a man identified as Sunny was swept away in Parsigutta after a drain wall collapsed near the 44 bus stop. His scooter was later recovered half a kilometre away, but search teams have yet to trace him. In a separate incident, two men, Arjun (26) and Rama (28), were washed away in Nampally. Disaster Response Force personnel have launched search operations at both sites, scouring manholes and drains.
Residents voiced anger over the city’s poor drainage network, saying repeated complaints had been ignored. Shopkeepers reported floodwaters entering their establishments, damaging stock and disrupting business.
