IND vs NZ: Arshdeep unfazed by selection chatter, takes it match by match

India’s T20 World Cup 2026 preparations began on a high note in Nagpur, and amid a dominant series-opening win over New Zealand, Arshdeep Singh made it clear that selection pressure is not on his mind.

The left-arm pacer emphasized focusing on the present and giving his best whenever called upon. Speaking after India’s 48-run victory in the first T20I, Arshdeep said, “I try to be ready all the time. Whenever the team gives me a chance, I try to give my best. Few things are not in my hands, and I try to enjoy every game.”

Adding a touch of humor about the flat Nagpur wicket, he quipped, “First of all, I take God’s name. Wicket flat lag rahi hai bhagwanji, aaj thoda bacha lena (the wicket is looking flat God, please save me today).”

Rising to the occasion

Arshdeep’s role in India’s white-ball setup has often been on-and-off. While he has been more consistent in T20Is, ODIs have seen frequent rotation, leading to fan debate. Yet his credentials are undeniable: 240 wickets in 180 T20 matches at an economy of 8.73. In the previous T20I series against South Africa, he claimed five wickets in four matches, maintaining discipline even on flat tracks.

His ability to deliver under pressure was key in India’s T20 World Cup 2024 triumph, where he finished as the team’s leading wicket-taker with 17 scalps in eight games, including a crucial 2/20 in the final alongside Jasprit Bumrah.

Nagpur performance

In the first T20I against New Zealand, Arshdeep justified his selection over Harshit Rana with 1/31 in four overs, conceding at 7.80 on a high-scoring surface. India’s innings featured Abhishek Sharma’s blistering 84 off 35 balls and Rinku Singh’s 44* off 20, propelling the team to 238/7 — their highest T20I total against New Zealand. The bowlers then restricted New Zealand to 190/7, with Varun Chakaravarthy and Shivam Dube taking two wickets each.

With the T20 World Cup set to begin in India on February 7, Arshdeep looks set to be a key figure in the bowling attack alongside Bumrah. While team selection debates may continue, Arshdeep remains focused on one game at a time, letting performance speak for itself.
