IND vs PAK: Muneeba Ali’s run-out sparks controversy in women’s World Cup clash

Drama unfolded in the India vs Pakistan clash on Sunday, October 5, in Colombo as Pakistan opener Muneeba Ali was dismissed in a controversial run-out.

The incident occurred at the striker’s end when Ali was seemingly unaware of the ball’s location, allowing Deepti Sharma to hit the stumps. However, the dismissal sparked confusion and debate.

During the final ball of the fourth over, Kranti Goud struck Ali on the pads and immediately appealed. At that moment, Ali was outside her crease and moving back slowly, with her feet still short of the line. Initially, she had grounded her bat behind the crease, but as the ball hit the stumps, the bat lifted slightly and her feet were still out of the crease.

The third umpire initially gave her not out, but upon reviewing the footage again, Kerrin Klaaste noticed the raised bat at the moment the stumps were hit and overturned the decision. Ali was sent back to the pavilion, much to the shock of the Pakistan team.

Pakistan captain Fatima Sana protested vehemently, coming out of the dressing room to discuss the decision with the fourth umpire. The Pakistan dugout was visibly stunned as the decision went against them. At that point, Pakistan were chasing 248 runs to register their first-ever win over India in women’s World Cup encounters.

What the Law Says

Under MCC law 30.1:

A batter is considered out of her ground unless some part of her person or bat is grounded behind the popping crease at that end.

However, a batter is not out if, while running or diving towards her ground and having grounded part of her person or bat beyond the crease, there is a subsequent loss of contact between her bat or body and the ground.

In this case, the umpire judged that Ali’s bat had left the ground when the stumps were broken, making the run-out technically correct, but highly contentious given the close circumstances.
