India End Asian Games Campaign with 85 Medals, 21 Golds After Late Surge

4

India brought its Asian Games campaign to a memorable close on Saturday, October 3, as the men’s hockey team defeated Malaysia 5-1 in the final to clinch the country’s 21st gold medal.

The victory took India’s overall medal tally to 85 and secured another top-five finish at the quadrennial multi-sport event. India’s haul in Aichi-Nagoya was lower than its record-breaking performance in Hangzhou three years ago. The country won 106 medals in 2022, including 28 golds, becoming the first Indian contingent to cross the 100-medal mark at the Asian Games.

The campaign in Japan had its share of highs and disappointments, but India produced a remarkable turnaround in the closing stages. As late as Thursday, the contingent had managed only 10 gold medals and was outside the top 10 in the overall medal standings.

The final two days sparked a stunning medal rush. India struck gold in hockey and cricket, while athletes in archery, boxing and wrestling also delivered crucial victories. The late surge brought 11 additional gold medals, taking India’s tally to 21 and lifting the country back into the top five.

The dramatic finish gave India’s campaign fresh momentum and ensured the contingent ended the Games on a strong and memorable note.
