India Showcases Operation Sindoor at East Asia Summit Meet in Malaysia.
India’s Joint Secretary at the Ministry of External Affairs, Periasamy Kumaran, briefed senior ASEAN officials on Operation Sindoor during the East Asia Summit (EAS) Senior Officials’ Meeting held on June 10 in Penang, Malaysia. The meeting, chaired by Dato’ Sri Amran Mohamed Zin, Secretary General of Malaysia’s Foreign Ministry, saw participation from officials of all EAS member states.
Kumaran highlighted the East Asia Summit’s critical role in advancing peace, stability, and security across the Indo-Pacific. Stressing synergy between India’s Indo-Pacific Oceans’ Initiative (IPOI) and the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP), he reaffirmed New Delhi’s commitment to a rules-based regional order.
In particular, Kumaran emphasized Operation Sindoor, India’s recent counter-terror response following the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir. He noted that the operation was “measured, proportionate, non-escalatory, and responsible,” underlining India’s focus on countering state-sponsored terrorism.
India also invited member nations to upcoming EAS events, including the Knowledge Exchange Workshop on Energy Efficiency under the Mission LiFE programme, and the EAS Heads of Higher Education Institutions Conclave at Nalanda University.
During the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) SOM on June 11, discussions centered around enhancing cooperation in maritime security, cyber threats, and counter-terrorism. Kumaran reiterated India’s support for deeper regional engagement on these fronts.
On the sidelines, Kumaran held bilateral talks with officials from Australia, Brunei, Malaysia, New Zealand, South Korea, and Singapore, strengthening India’s diplomatic outreach in the Indo-Pacific.
