India on Sunday issued a safety advisory for its citizens in Mexico following escalating violence linked to ongoing security operations in several regions.

In a statement posted on X, the Embassy of India in Mexico City urged Indian nationals to remain indoors and exercise heightened caution, particularly in affected areas.

“There are ongoing security operations and related road blockages and criminal activity. Indian nationals in Jalisco State (Puerto Vallarta, Chapala, Guadalajara), Tamaulipas State (Reynosa and other municipalities), parts of Michoacan State, Guerrero State, and Nuevo Leon State should shelter in place until further notice,” the embassy said.

Safety Guidelines for Indian Nationals

The embassy advised citizens to:

  • Avoid areas near law enforcement activity

  • Stay aware of surroundings

  • Seek shelter and minimize unnecessary movement

  • Monitor local media for updates

  • Follow directions of local authorities

  • Call 911 in case of emergency

  • Avoid large gatherings

  • Keep family and friends informed of their status

Indian nationals requiring assistance can contact the Embassy of India in Mexico at +52 55 4847 7539.

The advisory comes as clashes and disruptions were reported across parts of Mexico after a military operation targeting Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho,” leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).

Mexican authorities said El Mencho was critically injured during a confrontation with security forces in Jalisco and later died while being airlifted to Mexico City.

CJNG is widely regarded as one of Mexico’s most powerful and violent criminal organizations. According to the US Drug Enforcement Administration, the group rivals the Sinaloa cartel in strength and maintains an extensive operational footprint.

The United States and Canada have also issued similar advisories for their citizens in Mexico.
