Koizumi-Rajnath Singh Meet to Spotlight India-Japan Defence Cooperation on August 20

India and Japan are set to take stock of their expanding defence partnership as Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi meets Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi on August 20.

Koizumi is scheduled to arrive in Mumbai on August 19, where he is expected to visit a naval facility before heading to the national capital. His India trip comes shortly after the two countries signed their first co-development agreement for the UNICORN naval radio antenna system, adding momentum to bilateral defence technology cooperation.

Defence Industry, Military Readiness on Agenda

The upcoming talks are expected to cover greater cooperation in defence manufacturing and technology, along with joint military preparedness. India and Japan have steadily increased their defence engagement, with collaboration extending across several strategic and operational areas.

The partnership is also likely to see increased air-force cooperation in September. Fighter jets from the Japan Air Self-Defense Force are expected to participate in an air exercise in India. Japanese Air Chief General Takehiro Morita is also likely to visit during the drills and interact with senior Indian military officials.

Strategic Dialogue Continues

Koizumi’s visit follows the eighth India-Japan Defence Policy Dialogue held in Tokyo on July 13. Indian Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh and Japan’s Vice Minister of Defence Kano Koji jointly chaired the meeting.

The discussions included cooperation in cyber security, space and advanced military technologies, reflecting the widening scope of the bilateral defence relationship.

Indo-Pacific Cooperation

New Delhi and Tokyo continue to underline their shared commitment to a free, open and rules-based Indo-Pacific. Their defence partnership focuses on strengthening maritime security, securing critical sea lanes and responding to evolving strategic challenges.

India and Japan will also participate in multilateral maritime cooperation. The Indian Navy and Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force are scheduled to join the annual Malabar exercise later this year alongside the United States and Australia.

The August 20 meeting is expected to further strengthen defence-industrial cooperation and strategic coordination between the two Indo-Pacific partners.
