India Calls Canadian Media Reports on Nijjar Case ‘Baseless and Politically Motivated’

India on Monday rejected claims by the Canadian media linking New Delhi to the murder of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, describing the allegations as “politically motivated” and lacking credible evidence.

The reports emerged during Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s first visit to India, a trip aimed at restoring bilateral ties. “India categorically rejects allegations of involvement in transnational violence or organised crime. These claims are baseless and unsupported by credible evidence,” said P Kumaran, Secretary (East), Ministry of External Affairs. He stressed that sensitive matters like these should follow proper legal procedures, without public or politicised commentary.

Background of India-Canada Relations

Relations between the two countries deteriorated in 2023 after then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged India’s involvement in Nijjar’s death. India denied the claims, calling them “absurd” and highlighting Ottawa’s tolerance of extremist Khalistani activities. Diplomatic tensions led to reciprocal expulsion of diplomats and a freeze in ties.

Since Carney’s 2025 election, relations have improved. Envoys were reappointed, and Carney’s visit focused on strengthening cooperation. During a joint press briefing, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced plans to finalise a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), targeting $50 billion in trade by 2030. “Unlocking the full potential of economic cooperation is our priority,” Modi said.
