India vs West Indies: Key Picks and Expectations for Season’s First Home Test Series

5

India is set to announce its squad for the upcoming two-Test series against the West Indies as the senior selection committee, headed by Ajit Agarkar, meets on Wednesday, 24 September.

The series begins at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on 2 October, just four days after the Asia Cup final in Dubai, marking a quick pivot from limited-overs cricket to the longer format.

A New Era Without Veterans

For the first time in over a decade, India will host a Test series without Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and R Ashwin, who retired before the England Tests. Under Shubman Gill’s captaincy, the new generation drew the five-match England series 2–2 and will now face a West Indies team that has struggled in overseas conditions. This also provides a chance for India to recover from last year’s 0–3 home defeat to New Zealand.

Selection Highlights

Jasprit Bumrah’s Role:
The key focus is whether Jasprit Bumrah will be included, given the demanding schedule ahead. Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate indicated that Bumrah might play the first Test despite the short turnaround. The pace attack is likely to feature Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, and Akash Deep, with Bumrah leading the line. If Akash Deep is unavailable due to injury, Harshit Rana or Arshdeep Singh may be called up.

Wicketkeeping Duties:
Rishabh Pant remains sidelined with a leg injury. Dhruv Jurel, who impressed at the Oval and for India A, is expected to start, with N Jagadeesan as the backup and potential top-order option.

No. 3 Slot:
India continues to look for a stable No. 3 after Cheteshwar Pujara’s exit. Sai Sudharsan showed promise in England, while Karun Nair and Shubman Gill have also been tried. Selectors may persist with Sudharsan, hoping home conditions will aid his performance.

Middle Order and Other Contenders:
Abhimanyu Easwaran, still uncapped, may miss out again. Karun Nair could retain a spot due to his experience, while Devdutt Padikkal remains in contention after a 150 for India A. Shreyas Iyer has withdrawn from India A due to back issues, and Sarfaraz Ahmed continues rehabilitation.

Spin Department:
Ravindra Jadeja will lead the spin attack in R Ashwin’s absence, with Kuldeep Yadav and Washington Sundar included. Axar Patel seeks a recall, facing competition from Manav Suthar, who recently claimed a five-wicket haul for India A.
