India Welcomes Trump-Putin Alaska Talks, Echoes Modi’s ‘Not an Era of War’ Call.
India on Saturday backed the upcoming 15 August summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, voicing hope it could help end the war in Ukraine. The Ministry of External Affairs said the meeting “holds the promise of bringing to an end the ongoing conflict and opening up prospects for peace,” and reaffirmed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s message that “this is not an era of war.”
“India endorses the upcoming summit and stands ready to support these efforts,” the MEA added.
Trump confirmed the meeting on Truth Social, calling it “highly anticipated” and noting it will take place in the “Great State of Alaska.” The announcement ends weeks of speculation over the venue, after reports that Putin had preferred the United Arab Emirates.
The Alaska summit will mark Trump’s first meeting with Putin since starting his second term in January and the first formal US-Russia presidential talks since June 2021. The agenda is expected to centre on Ukraine, now in its fourth year of conflict.
