India Women ride ODI high into T20 World Cup preparations with Sri Lanka

India Women Shift Focus to T20 World Cup with Sri Lanka Series.

Fresh from their historic ODI World Cup triumph — India’s first ICC women’s title — the team is already turning attention to the T20 World Cup in England 2026. With little time to reflect on their 50-over success, preparations start immediately with a five-match T20I series against Sri Lanka in Visakhapatnam and Thiruvananthapuram.

The series is an opportunity to recalibrate a side that has dominated ODIs but faces a tougher, less forgiving T20 format. Memories of past T20 World Cups — the heavy 2020 final loss to Australia and a group-stage exit in the previous edition — underscore that ODI glory does not guarantee success in T20 cricket.

Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur in Focus

India’s ODI success rested on Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur, and they remain central to this campaign. Mandhana carries momentum from her ODI performances, while Harmanpreet looks to replicate her decisive leadership in T20s. Former captain Shantha Rangaswamy had suggested a leadership change, but Anjum Chopra has backed continuity, affirming Harmanpreet as the team’s best captain for now.

Other key players include Jemimah Rodrigues, Deepti Sharma, Shafali Verma, Renuka Singh, Kranti Goud, and Shree Charani. Their combination of experience and emerging talent will shape India’s transition from ODI dominance to T20 ambition.

Youth in the Spotlight

Selectors have infused fresh talent, reflecting a long-term vision. Vaishnavi Sharma and G Kamalini, stars of India’s U19 T20 World Cup defense, earn senior call-ups. Vaishnavi impressed with a hat-trick and five-wicket haul at junior level, while Kamalini has turned heads with fearless batting and a standout WPL season. The Sri Lanka series offers both players a platform to cement their places and deepen India’s talent pool.

Sri Lanka and Chamari Athapaththu

For Sri Lanka, captain Chamari Athapaththu remains the lynchpin. The team’s success hinges on her performance, supported by Hasini Perera, Vishmi Gunaratne, Nilakshi de Silva, Inoka Ranaweera, Harshitha Samarawickrama, and uncapped Nimasha Madushani. Athapaththu’s impact will largely determine Sri Lanka’s challenge against India.

1st T20I: Visakhapatnam Conditions

Vizag hosts a T20I for the first time since 2014. The pitch has evolved into a more batter-friendly surface, as seen in the ODI World Cup. No rain is forecast, with temperatures around 24°C and humidity in the low to mid-70s.

Head-to-Head: India dominate Sri Lanka in T20Is, winning 20 of 26 matches. At home, India have won four of six encounters. Sri Lanka’s most notable win came in last year’s Asia Cup final.
